Ouch...sunburn

A quickie blog!  Tomorrow we’re heading to my parents for lunch.  They have a pool yipeeeee…and my mum is amazing and feeds us all and entertains the kids.  Such a luxury!  But the heat is horrendous right now!

I cover the kids from neck to knee and pour sunscreen on what’s left bare and top the look with a hat AND THEY STILL GET BURNT!  Sorry for yelling but honestly it’s unbelievable that they still get burnt with all the effort I go to.  Ok, so it’s not badly.  It may just be a slightly pink nose but still…

There’s a few things I do like aloe vera and cool showers/baths but my big trick is Cantharis 30c.
Cantharis is traditionally used in Homeopathy to reduce the discomfort of mild burns including sunburn. Usually I give them a dose before dinner and one before bed.  I have found it to be beyond compare for sunburn.  If I forget the Cantharis we remember the sunburn…ouch!

Its history is pretty interesting to say the least and at this point I can’t help myself!  It’s made from the Spanish fly which was crushed and used in its unpotentised form (ie not homeopathic) as an aphrodisiac in the 1700s.  It had the ability to cause heat in the nether regions apparently. There’s lots of stories of people being poisoned by it *cue sniggering*. Homeopathically ‘what causes will cure’ so it’s no wonder that the sunburn you get on the beach looking at all those scantily clad bodies can be managed with Cantharis!

It’s also noted for its urinary tract infection symptoms and able to be used in the management of other minor burns but they are blogs for another day!

Just to be clear I am under no circumstances suggesting you throw caution to the wind and get burnt because you have Cantharis- prevention folks! And I am also not suggesting that it will prevent the long term sun damage that occurs when you get burnt.  I'm simply saying you can use it to suport the symptoms of sunburn.

Hope your day is a good one! Ciao!

DENGUE...

If you've been unlucky enough to have it a shiver has probably already run down your spine...

Do you remember the fever and chills or the bone pain that gave dengue its name?  It means 'break bone fever'.  Maybe it's the metallic taste in your mouth or even the pain in your eyes that were red raw looking anyway.  I really hope it wasn't the headache you remember.  A rash!  Itchy.  You remember...

If you haven't had it you're probably feeling pretty lucky right now and heading for the insect repellent! It truly is a an awful viral disease that a tiny little mossie spreads.  Specifically, the Aedes aegypti variety.  They breed in the smallest amount of water which makes them excellent survivors unfortunately for us.

If you live in the tropics you're probably well acquainted with the symptoms even if you haven't had it.  Everyone knows someone who has had it.  You just can't escape it!  And everyone has the ideal remedy, cure, treatment etc.  Everyone has an opinion on the best way to beat it.  Conventional medicine says there is no treatment except rest (and I totally agree with rest) and analgesics.

Years ago I was seated next to a really lovely lady at a birthday dinner.  As it turned out she was a doctor so we started chatting about health etc and how so many doctors aren't terribly keen on Homeopaths and vice versa!  Then she said that she didn't mind Homoepathy but it wasn't like it could treat Dengue...well, she's kinda right...and wrong!  Homeopathy would never claim to treat Dengue as it treats the person not the disease.  It strengthens the body to fight the disease.  But in this way it can be used to help manage the symptoms of Dengue!

So, I'm wading in with my opinion on managing the excruciating symptoms of Dengue!

True to our name it is simple. Just the one word. Homeopathy.  There are 12 main remedies that have been listed specifically for Dengue for the last 85+yrs.  Incredible isn't it?  There are others that have been used as Homeopathy treats the person, not the disease, but these 12 have stood the test of time and are the ones I start looking at first.

The remedies I'm talking about here are traditionally used to support symptoms similar to those caused by the dengue virus. Dengue is not something they specifically treat as Homeopathy treats teh person and each person will experience dengue in a slightly different way, physically and emotionally.

Remedies to consider for home-prescribing include:
Aconite -for its sudden onset of symptoms including a high fever and fear of death.
Gelsemium- a favourite flu remedy, makes a strong appearance with chills that cause you to shake, dizziness and the typical 'drowsy, droopy, dopey' demeanour.
Rhus Tox- is a match if the symptoms are better with gentle movement and the rash is a main complaint.

Other remedies that may be of help: Arsenicum Album, Belladonna, Bryonia, Cantharis, Ipecac and Nux Vomica.

So if you are unlucky enough to need this blog (and I sincerely hope you are not) check out the remedies above.  If you can't work out the best one or are simply too sick to do it, which is highly likely, contact your Homeopath to get the best remedy for your individual circumstances.  The sooner you get on top of it the better!

We've arrived!

I cannot believe the day has finally arrived!  I've just moved into my bricks and mortar clinic! Bang in the middle of Kuranda village but tucked away under a Vietnamese restaurant and next to the thriving Kuranda Original Rainforest Markets.  It's a brilliant position that is equal parts quiet and central. I cannot wait to start helping clients meet their health goals in there.
The entire family helped with the move.  My beautiful daughter alphabetised remedies for me while my eldest son helped his dad with the furniture.  My sweet and comic son in the middle helped with books and wiping out draws.  The wee one of the group...well he is only 4!  And me?  Ahhhh...I flapped about everywhere.  Furniture moving, book organising, dispensary ordering...I need a cuppa and a lie down!
Check out the photos!  Keep in mind that it is still a work in progress.  Certificates and anatomical posters need to be added to the walls, kits and remedies need to be made up and filing needs to be done!  That's just what I can think of right now...
Check out the photos! Click play up in the left to see them all.

Did you see the table in the corner?  Well that's there so I can start doing a few short courses based on the kits I will sell. My long suffering, but ever supportive partner, Gavin, had a few choice things to say about moving that table in!  I think it will be Arnica all round tonight to ease the aching muscles tomorrow!
You might know Arnica as the bruising remedy but it can be really useful after you have had a big work out either in the gym or out and about.  It's also brilliant in the management of strains and sprains.  Arnica should grace the shelves of every home in my humble opinion!
Gavin finds  Bellis Perennis has a greater effect on him after a hard days labour.  It address deeper muscle strain especially if you have then had a cool breeze blowing on your overworked body.  It's known as the gardener's remedy for that exact reason- hard day in the yard and as the sun goes down and you are packing the tools away along comes that cool evening breeze.
What I'd give for that breeze right now!  The tropical wet hasn't quite arrived but the humidity has definitely set up house.

Love and laughter 'til next time!
