What is Homeopathy?

Many, many years ago (12 years to be more precise) I was asking the same question!  However I wasn't so interested in the answer as finding something for my snotty baby that was more natural than anything I could get at the pharmacy.  A friend suggested a local Homeopath and away I went, got a remedy and the wee babe got better.  Honestly, I didn't see miracles.  I just saw a child recovering without antibiotics or Panadol.
Ok so not the most riveting story or the most persuasive! Fast forward 4 years and I was passing The Heirophant in Canberra. This time I had 3 snotty children and a snotty self!  Still having no idea what homeopathy was beyond a few drops of something or other I was drawn up the stairs and into Aladdin's cave...this time there were miracles!  The following day the insane amounts of thick yellow mucus I had been blowing from my nose had gone.  Gone just like that.  I still had no idea what Homeopathy was but for the second time I saw recovery as you would like it.  We all want to get well.  We all want to avoid a sniffle becoming a chest infection and so on...you see where this is going?

In short, Homeopathics are made from all kinds of substances predominantly natural.  There are some exceptions but far and away the majority of the remedies are made from plants, minerals and a few animal substances (venom and milk are the most common). The bigger question I get is 'but how does it work?'
There are lots of reasons we need to know what Homeopathy is but in the end the fact that we get relief from our ailments, that we function better in the world is answer enough. Righto I'm not trying to wriggle out of an explanation.  I'm just letting you know that if something works and it's doing no harm,  you don't always need to know exactly why or how it works.
"Stop blathering Sarah and tell us what it is."  Ok, ok...here goes.  Two hundred and some years ago Samuel Hahneman realised that the Greek philosophers may of been onto something when they said that 'like cure like' or 'what causes will cure'.  He stumbled on the idea anecdotally but was able to continue building on it.  He also found that the smaller the amount that was given the larger the effect.  He diluted and diluted until the science of the time could no longer find any trace of the original substance.  And yet people still got better after being treated with homeopathy.  In fact the results were so astounding that others started studying what Hahneman had put together.

For a long, long time I've heard Homeopathy described as an energetic medicine.  And yes I can see why.  Studies have been done finding that every living thing has a unique vibration.  This is one explanation I've heard given for Homeopathy.  It is often put into the vibrational medicine box.

More recently we're seeing that water has a memory which may also explain why Homeopathy works.  The research for this is being carried out by none other than a Nobel Laureate who discovered the link between AIDS and HIV.  But the most interesting development has been nanoparticles!!  I'm not terribly mathematically minded but nano anything is significantly smaller than we have ever been able to measure before.  If you are super mathematically minded this is the article for you!  Could this be why Homeopathy has treated so many people over 200yrs?  Could this be the reason it is the second most used medical system in the world (according to the WHO)? And no, the first is not conventional medicine!  Maybe that's why millions of people world wide use it...

BUT what can it do for me?' And this is the most important question because no matter how it works or what it is the outcome is the most important. Here's the short list of what it can be used to support:
  • Headaches/migraines
  • period pain
  • IBS and other digestive issues
  • eczema/psoriasis and general skin problems
  • depression/anxiety
  • asthma
  • menopause and fertility
  • varicose veins
  • pregnancy issues
  • injuries
  • constipation
  • insect bites
  • allergies
  • sinus problems
  • coughs and colds
  • gastro viruses
Glad you asked?  So am I! Like I said this is the short list...
The areas that Homeopathy can reach are limitless because Homeopaths treat the person not the disease.  We want to know how you sleep, what you eat, when and how you've been sick, how you're feeling, what makes you tick as a human being in the world, we want to know your knicker size...sorry the last one was a step too far but you see what I mean?
There are lots of reasons to see a Homeopath but knowing what Homeopathy is, isn't one of them.  So have a look at what you can expect, how you take Homeopathics and if it's ok with your other meds right here!  And make that appointment!

How to get the best from your Bowen!

You’ve had a great Bowen session and feeling good!  Of course you want to resume all your normal activities because you feel fine.  Bowen has worked its magic so off you go and do that work out or go for that run…WRONG!

Picture
The Bowen will continue to work for a number of days (between 5-10) after your session.  During this time the mind/body is checking in and making adjustments as necessary.  If you go for that fantastic long run (that got you injured in the first place) you are letting your body know that this is what you want.  You want it to be tight in all the usual spots and you want it to keep doing that movement that hurts.  So that’s what you’ll get.
If, instead, you follow the guidelines below you’ll be encouraging your body to adjust itself back to a natural unstressed position of painlessness.  And this is how you want it to be. Yes?
Picture
Picture
Picture
WATER: over the next few days drink plenty of water.  Staying hydrated allows the fascia, muscles, tendons etc to function at their optimal level.  It also helps to keep your kidneys and other internal organs working to flush out any toxins your body many decide to rid itself of while the body unwinds and resets itself.
WALK: yep walk.  Just walk.  A short walk every day and regular daily activity is enough.  This sets the body back into good patterns of movement that are unstressed.  It allows the body to unwind. Don’t do that run or big work out no matter how great you feel!  Let the Bowen do its job.
WAIT: And again…don’t do that massive workout.  Your body was injured and it is now repairing.  This takes time.  Treat your body gently and with respect while you are receiving Bowen.  Take a relaxing walk and let the body unwind. Patience is the key here.  Your Bowen therapist is working hard to get you feeling great again but impatience works against the healing process.  Let the Bowen go about its business uninterrupted.
And of course there's more!  I know you love your massage but…any other body work eg massage of any sort, lymphatic drainage, chiropractic work etc will also interrupt the Bowen. This includes another Bowen session within 5 days!  Bowen instigates a self-healing process in the body and this takes place over 5-10 days.  Any modality that manipulates the muscles or skeletal structure will interrupt the Bowen. If you’ve committed to getting Bowen treatment let the Bowen work.  The other modalities are awesome too but one at a time folks! Chat with your therapist if you’re not sure.
One more thing to remember to get the best out of your Bowen!  Don’t use hot or cold packs on your injury while receiving Bowen treatment.  I know the wheat pack feels great but it will absolutely interrupt the Bowen. The Bowen session you had 2 days ago is still acting!  And it will continue to do so for 5-10 days…let it do its work!
Picture
“But when can I run/workout/ride etc again?”  Ahhhhh….the big question on everyones lips…It is a process of reintroducing your usual exercise routine slowly.  If you were recovering from the flu chances are you wouldn’t start off with a big work out or even anything strenuous.  The same applies here.  Your body is recovering and repairing.  Listen to it! By taking 2-3 weeks to recover you can prevent further injury or prolonged recovery.  Frustrating I know but that’s how it works.

Think of your body like an overheated car- it won’t start again until you let it cool down (put it into rest and repair mode), add water and maybe patiently make a few more adjustments and maybe even fix the leaky radiator etc…If you get that car started before you’ve done all those things you risk further, more serious damage.
Picture
And the golden rule- if you’re not sure ask your Bowen therapist!  Put their card on your fridge and ring/text/email them.
Get the best from your Bowen and enjoy the results!
Love and laughter til next week!

Healing 'The Long and Winding Road...'

4/5/2016

Picture
You're getting a real sense for my eclectic taste in music!  In my early teens right through to my late teens I had a total  love affair with The Beatles. I spent many hours mooning about John Lennon (already dead and buried for a number of years) and dreaming of the Cavern in Liverpool where they got started.  Ahhhhh...the glory days of music.
Sorry. Back to health and healing.  When we get injured or sick we just want to get better and be back to our old selves.  Agreed?  We want to go back to the time when we felt well and we want to do it as quickly as possible.  Immediately in fact.  If there was a magic pill we'd take it.  Unfortunately for us healing and good health doesn't always work that way.  Acute conditions may respond to Homeopathics in this way e.g a flu may improve very quickly with the right Homeopathic, bruising may rapidly disappear with Arnica, you may feel a million dollars after your Bowen session.  Awesome!  We love it when that happens!  It's incredibly satisfying for the client and the practitioner.  And with the acute conditions I see it regularly.

However, when we're dealing with chronic conditions (those ones that last for years, maybe our mother had it too, maybe it's hormonal, mental or emotional etc) or injuries (plantar fasciitis, injuries that have plagued you for years, those that developed over time from sports or are work related etc)  the healing and the path back to health can truly be the mythical 'Long and Winding Road'.  The way I explain it to my clients is this...
Picture
This is what we all hope for.  We want  a clear path back to our healthy life.  The trend is straight up, no blips, no waivers and no back tracking.  Gotta love the upward trajectory!
Picture
The reality is this.  See how it jumps up and down?  There are peaks and valleys as well as plateaus.  This is far more common!  Most importantly though...the general trend is still upward!  Go the upward trajectory!  It can be difficult for us to see sometimes, especially if we have hit a valley, but if you look back at where you started you get a clearer picture of the gains you've made.  This is healing.  This is the path to good health.
Picture
Every now and again I see this kind of healing.  It's slow and painstaking with many plateaus and tiny gains.  BUT the general trend is still upward.  Although the slope is long and slow the general trajectory is still upward.  This can be really disheartening for everyone but it is super important to remember that the graph still shows an upward trend.  Don't give up!!
Picture
So why the peaks, valleys and plateaus?  Good question!  And the answer is multi faceted...This is what graphs can't plot and predict.  Here are some thoughts.

Sometimes life gets in the way.  At sometime in the healing process we may experience stress, grief or extenuating circumstances which may mean a number of things.  Maybe we start eating poorly again and go back to old habits.  Maybe we forget to take the homeopathics or miss Bowen appointments.  Maybe just the stress has exacerbated your condition temporarily. These things are unavoidable. Speak to your practitioner to see what they can do to support you through this valley.

Maybe you need a review.  It may be a simple case of upping the potency or maybe you need or sit through it as your body rebels against being well again.  The best way forward is to contact your practitioner.  They've done some heavy duty study on just these things and will be able to take you to the next step.

The biggest avoidable reason for valleys and plateaus is this.  Once you start feeling well again you want to jump right back into life where you left off.  This is especially true for injuries.  You have a Bowen session, you wake up feeling amazing and go for an enormous run or work out and BINGO!  The old injury returns.  Maybe you've cut out wheat and the treatments/remedies are working.  You feel so awesome that wheat starts to creep back in and BINGO!  All the old issues return.  Maybe not as bad but they return.  That's the valley or the plateau.  Give your body time to truly heal.  Ease yourself back into life. Have respect for the healing process and your body.  You need to build your fitness back up, strengthen muscles and listen to your body. We're all human.  I do this kind of thing all the time but if you want the best from your Bowen or the best from your homeopathy keep this in mind!

If you've been struggling with a health issue or injury for months or years it is unlikely it will resolve overnight.  The bottom line is healing and good health takes time and hard work. The path is not usually straight.  It can feel like you are going nowhere.  BUT...look back to where you began- you won't turn into a pillar of salt (I promise) but you will see how far you have come!
