What is Bowen Therapy?

Bowen therapy is a dynamic system of muscle and connective tissue therapy that was developed here in Australia by Tom Bowen. It is sometimes referred to as the Homeopathy of bodywork as it uses subtle inputs to the body to stimulate it to heal itself.
The Bowen technique address the whole body by restoring balance to the autonomic nervous system (ANS).  The ANS is responsible for a whopping 80% of body functions so best we keep it in good condition! By allowing the nervous system to move out of 'fight or flight' mode and into 'rest and repair' we allow the body time to assess what needs to be done and initiate healing. With our busy lifestyles these days we seem to spend far too little time in 'rest and repair'!  Would you agree?

What happens in a session?

To start with I'll talk to you about what problems you may have and what you would like to achieve. As we said before, in Bowen small moves are made over your muscles.  Maybe only 2 will be done then the practitioner leaves the room for a couple of minutes allowing the body to process the messages.  When they return they'll make a few more moves and so on for about an hour.
When you get up you may feel a little woozy so stay seated til it passes- 30sec to a couple of minutes. You may have exercises to do at home but nothing strenuous. The entire session lasts about an hour.

Do I have to come back?

Three visits  5-10 days apart are  recommended to get your healing started and to hold.  You may find that's enough or you may find you need more depending on the problem.

Do I need to do anything?

There are a few basic guidelines for your session to help you get the most out of your Bowen.
  • Don't have any other form of bodywork for four days beforehand or at least a week after.
  • Avoid heavy exercise on the day of your session.
  • Don't use ice or heat on the site of injury for at least a week after your Bowen.
  • Wear or bring light-weight, loose-fitting clothing that your practitioner can work through. Or be prepared to be worked on in your underclothes, under sheets or blankets for modesty and comfort.
  • Read 'How to get the best from your Bowen'
