Nutritional Medicine

We are what we eat!

Ridiculously cliched and yet so very true! We're not talking about about turning into a lettuce or tomato but really talking about how we feel. Put the good stuff in and feel good, put 'crap' in and, well, feel 'crap'.  And 'crap' is relative to the individual concerned!

So many people hear the word nutrition and automatically think weight. Not true! Most nutritionists are more concerned with what goes in your mouth (and comes out the other end) than your weight because we know that health is wholistic. Unless you come in specifically to loose weight it's not something I focus on. Sort out the nutrition, get people in the right frame of mind and the rest will follow.

The bigger question is what is good for us? It seems that every time I log into facebook there's another juice fast or cleanse or diet solution that everyone must do to regain energy and cure just about everything! It's exhausting reading about all the things we should be doing!

The reality is so completely different! Seeing a trained nutritionist is about you! Not your neighbour or you're best mate or work colleagues but YOU! We all have unique nutritional needs. One size fits all diets are only good for a small portion of the community. Do you really need to give up grains or dairy or tomatoes or......?  Do you need to include more veg, more protein, more good fats? The possibilities are endless!

Why see a nutritionist?

Many, and I'd argue most, health issues can be helped, and even resolved, through nutrition and nutritional supplements.
  • Are you having digestive issues?
  • Do you have a health issue that needs a specific way of eating or think it would benefit?
  • Do you have inflammation anywhere in the body?
  • Are you lacking in energy and feeling fatigued on a daily basis?
  • Are your menstrual cycles crazy?
  • Is your libido low (men and women)?
  • Is your health and wellbeing not optimal right now?
  • children on the spectrum or have ADHD?

Any of these things can be improved with nutrition. Nutrition is the core of our health. Get it right and so many other things fall into place.

Supplements

Sometimes these are necessary but generally not forever. The idea is to use them in times of need or utter depletion until we have resolved the issue that led to the depletion in the first place.
There are reasons you are depleted in something or need something to support a particular system at a particular time. Once we get to the bottom of it and improve your general nutrition you can stop these or go back to an 'as needed' basis.
We can work this out together. Remember health is a journey with forks in the road, pot holes and destinations along the way.

Testing

Sometimes, but not always, tests need to be done to check levels of different nutrients, hormones, heavy metals etc.
Often the symptoms are the best information I can get. I ask a lot of questions- I mean a lot! Especially in the first consult. I don't muck about! Let's get you feeling better with a minimum of fuss.

'Diet' is a dirty word

Yep. I think so and aim to talk about 'nutrition' not 'diet'. Technically your diet is just what you eat on a daily basis but the word has been completely bastardised to mean a restricted way of eating.
Sure we all have our restrictions eg wheat makes me feel bloated so I restrict it, diabetics need to watch their sugar intake, people with allergies can't eat what they're allergic too but these are sensible restrictions that make us feel better not miserable!
So let's talk about nutrition and getting the best out of what goes in our mouths!
