The #1 Mistake Women Make When Trying to Fix Their Hormones (and What Actually Works)

Spoiler: It’s not your fault — you’ve just been told to look in the wrong places.

Hands up if you’ve tried a new diet, bought another supplement, or promised yourself that this time you’ll stick to an exercise routine… only to end up exhausted, frustrated, and still dealing with the same hormonal chaos? You’re not alone

We all do it, me included! We get blinded and can’t see the forest for the trees but if we just take a step back and look objectively our answers will look a lot different. What am I talking about? The biggest mistake we make when trying to fix a hormonal problem and it’s looking for a single solution that is a quick fix to all our woes.

I hate to be the one to break it to you, but it just doesn’t exist! There is no Holy Grail of hormone solutions.

Let’s look at a few that I see commonly in the clinic. And I won’t lie…some I have tried myself.

Mistake #1 Fad diets we have all heard that keto, carnivore, vegan or fasting will be the answer. I have tried at least 3 of those myself (guess which ones lol). And while they may give a short term improvement, ultimately, they simply aren’t balanced enough to be sustainable. Apart from the inevitable cravings they are not diverse enough to give you all the nutrients you need to create hormonal balance, feed the gut microbiome or allow your metabolism to function in tip top condition.

Mistake #2 Supplements overload this one may surprise you as this is my area of expertise, but they get totally misused. We are used to conventional medicine and ‘a pill for an ill’. I have seen so many women on dozens of supplements because they have one for the muscle aches, another for stress, one for sleep, one that is meant to give  them energy, one ‘I forgot what that was for but have been taking it for 2 years’. Sound familiar? It’s because they are putting out the spot fires but not addressing the actual core problems which may be a combination of stress, gut issues and poorly functioning detoxification pathways. Or something else entirely.

Mistake #3 Blaming yourself ‘I just need to exercise more/have more will power/learn to accept it…’ I would go on but ultimately if you have symptoms then something is wrong. If it’s hormonal, then you can’t out exercise it. In fact, in my experience, you can’t out exercise anything including weight, mood and especially hormones! It doesn’t mean exercise isn’t important but it’s not the only or most important thing you can do.

What does work!

Step #1 Find the root cause List out all the symptoms and look at the cause. You’ll find 2 or 3 big glaring influencers in there that pop up repeatedly. Those are the ones you need to address. Still not sure? I get it. We are not the most objective about our own health so reach out and book an appointment. This is exactly what I do day in day out to help women fix their hormones naturally.

Step #2 Stick to the basics you need to do the work. Now I don’t mean crazy fad diets and extreme exercise routines like I mentioned above. This is far simpler, more boring but ultimately much kinder with better results. I mean a back to basics approach of 3 balanced meals, walking or strength exercise that is realistic just 3-4 days a week and giving yourself a whole lot of grace in the process!

Early this year I had a client able to halve her medication(under her GP’s guidance) just because she got the basics right by following Metabolic Balance (insert link to MB blog here).

Step #3 Simplify your supplements which will be easier once you have the first 2 points in place. If it only addresses one thing then in the bin with it! Everything you take needs to be nourishing more than one part of you. Double check everything to make sure you aren’t doubling up. A lot of the combination supplements have similar ingredients. You need to be really careful with this!

I often reduce and simplify what clients are already taking just by identifying the root cause and eliminating double ups. Consulting a professional helps avoid the hormonal health mistakes that can be costly financially, time wise and to our health.

This will all take time as it’s not a band aid fix. Maybe you will need a couple of Band-Aids just to get you through and that’s ok too but the more you focus on the bigger picture and stop focusing on the individual symptoms the better you will start to feel. Self-care isn’t easy or sexy, but it works! It’s sustainable and a long term solution as well.

I am absolutely on your team if you are needing help with that all elusive forest! All you need to do is make that first step and book in to see me. Go on. Here’s the link to get you help asap.
